He said the collision involved a matatu and a pickup truck, with one vehicle travelling towards Nairobi and the other heading towards Meru.
He added that the vehicle coming from the Meru direction was not familiar with the road, leading to the assumption that the driver may have failed to stay in their lane.
"Seemingly the motor vehicle that was coming from the Meru direction is not a motor vehicle that regularly uses this road. We may assume that the driver did not keep to his lane as was expected of him," he said.
The commander further confirmed that two survivors were rushed to Chogoria Mission Hospital and Chuka Hospital for specialised treatment.
A traveller who spoke to the media explained that the van involved in the accident was part of a convoy returning to Kajiado after a parental blessing ceremony in Meru.
“We were heading home when we hit a steep descent. I saw the van in front of us drift off the road, cross the lane barriers, and collide with an oncoming pickup truck. There were 10 adults and two children in the van,” the witness reported.
Others at the scene noted that the van appeared to have suffered a brake failure as it descended into Nithi Valley.
